Fewer still survive changes in leadership, strategy, or environment. Most metrics do not fail because they are wrong. They fail because they are not usable when conditions change. Board-level metrics must be robust enough to be questioned without collapsing. They must tolerate scepticism. They must remain meaningful even when imperfect.

The environment has changed faster than most metrics

Many people metrics were designed for stability. They assumed sentiment moved slowly. They assumed periodic measurement was sufficient. They assumed time to interpret before acting. Those assumptions no longer hold. Emotional reality now shifts faster than reporting cycles. Issues surface externally before they are discussed internally. Delay is no longer neutral.

In this environment metrics that rely on infrequent capture or heavy aggregation struggle to remain relevant. By the time they are reviewed the organisation has already moved on. Accuracy without timeliness becomes retrospective.

What boards actually need from metrics

Boards do not need metrics to describe reality in full. They need them to indicate direction. To surface deviation. To signal when attention is required. A useful metric does not answer every question. It tells leaders which questions matter now.

This is why early signals often outperform detailed explanations. Knowing that something is shifting matters more than knowing exactly how much.

Why people metrics struggle to survive scrutiny

People metrics are often held to a higher standard than other indicators. They are expected to be statistically sound. Methodologically defensible. Comprehensive. At the same time they are asked to inform timely decisions. These two demands are often in tension. The result is metrics that are reliable but late. Robust but slow. Accurate but disconnected from action. This is not a failure of design. It is a mismatch between purpose and environment.

Surviving reality requires timing not precision

Metrics that survive reality prioritise timing over completeness. They are designed to be directional rather than definitive. They preserve signal rather than smoothing it away. They are comfortable being early rather than exact.

This is why some organisations are beginning to complement traditional reporting with simpler more frequent indicators of emotional reality. Approaches such as EHS are not attempts to replace established metrics. They exist to restore timing. To provide early visibility while there is still scope to respond proportionately. Not to dictate action. But to inform attention.

A metric earns its place through use

Ultimately metrics do not survive because they are mandated. They survive because leaders use them. They appear in conversations. They influence agenda setting. They shape where questions are asked.

A metric that never changes behaviour will eventually be ignored regardless of its quality. Boards should therefore ask a simple question of any measure presented to them. Does this help us see earlier or does it help us explain later?
